Examensarbeit aus dem Jahr 2005 im Fachbereich Anglistik - Sonstiges, Note: 2,0, Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: “The Transfer from Primary to Secondary Education and Teaching Modern Foreign Languages. A Comparison of the Systems and Issues experienced by Germany and Great Britain”

This paper considers the transfer from primary to secondary school and teaching modern foreign languages. It presents and analyses the situation in Germany before drawing comparisons with European Union co-member, Great Britain. This thesis will suggest possible solutions to alleviate the problems that occur during the first years of secondary school.

The study begins with a short description of the circumstances under which the transfer from primary to secondary school take place (chapter 2). This aids the reader to establish a basic knowledge of the differences between the German and British school systems. This is followed by an outline of the historical and present day situation for primary school foreign language teaching in both countries (chapter 3). Two contrasting methodological approaches for primary foreign language teaching are described by the study and a detailed discussion of the issues and merits of each approach is included.

Chapter 4 introduces the perspective of developmental psychology and discusses selected language acquisition theories and their application to the capacity of young learners. These theories suggest optimal methods and course content for early language teaching. This study emphasises the adaption of the theories to foreign language education and also proposes that the theories can not only be applied to primary school students, but also partly to the early years of secondary school.
